For too long America’s communities of color have suffered the devastation caused by a punitive, inequitable criminal justice system. The impact has been made worse by discriminatory sentencing and disastrous drug laws, as well as punishments that extend beyond prison – policies that deny the formerly incarcerated opportunities for employment, housing, and the right to vote. Is it possible to course-correct the system toward redemption and the restoration of dignity? Our panelists, representing the spectrum of experience with the criminal justice system, discuss the principles and practice of restorative justice, how these efforts can improve outcomes for returning citizens while reducing crime, and the responsibility of policy makers to enact equitable reform.
