Proximity bias, also known as geographical bias, refers to the tendency to favor individuals who are physically closer and, presumably, more accessible. A cognitive bias toward proximity can influence workplace decision-making, including hiring, promotions, and collaboration. In short, physical proximity becomes an indicator of competence. Post-pandemic, with more employees working remotely, proximity bias presents specific challenges, especially for Black professionals who may already navigate historical racial and gender discrimination. Remote workers have fewer opportunities than in-person colleagues for face-to-face interactions or casual encounters with decision makers that foster relationship building and visibility within the organization. As a result, Black remote workers may experience difficulties overcoming proximity bias and accessing opportunities for advancement.
