We had a chance to catch up with Quinn Conyers, founder of The Purse Paparazzi, who won 3rd place in the 2018 pitch contest. Check out her inspiring story! 

How did you find out about the Small Business Matters Entrepreneurship Summit?

I met Caron Washington [National Urban League’s Director of Entrepreneurship and Business Development] at a Shark Tank audition in New York. The show’s diversity coordinator gave a presentation on other ways to grow and expand your business and Caron told us about Small Business Matters and that’s how I was introduced.

What was your impression of Small Business Matters?

The workshops were definitely invaluable.  I’ve attended other business conferences before and their workshops usually are very elementary in nature, and this was by far a big step up.  I usually feel like the information presented is pretty basic and Small Business Matters was really robust in advanced knowledge for business owners, and it was really refreshing. It’s directed not just at people who are starting a business but people who are expanding a business.

How valuable was the Pitch Contest?

It really polishes your skills as a presenter, as an advocate for your business. Win or lose, it’s always intense but it’s a great learning experience. You get great feedback, plus you get to network with fellow pitch presenters and hear their feedback and impressions. Every time you get the change to show off your baby it’s a great opportunity.  Yes, it’s partly for the money but also for the exposure and publicity.

How were you able to put your winnings to use?

I was able to upgrade my website and produce some new designs for my wallets and wristlets.

Any advice to those thinking about attending Small Business Matters?

You have to get out of your comfort zone because you never know who’s going to be there who can help you take your business to the next level. You have to shake hands, kiss babies and pass out your business cards.
