Can Black America build wealth and narrow the gap without reparations? Or is reparations the only way to smash the institutional and historical racial barriers that have hindered Black economic advancement? This session takes a hard look at the data and whether accepted wealth-building strategies like home ownership, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship are working for us. The case for reparations for African Americans to redress the legacy of slavery in the U.S. has gained both traction and headlines in recent years, but the issue remains divisive and a political non-starter in the current climate. Meanwhile, the nation’s racial wealth gap continues to expand, leaving Black families substantially behind white families by every economic metric.
